Damascone Delta What Is It?
Imagine a fruity breeze drifting through the heart of a rose. Damascone Delta is the brightest, most fruity member of the damascone family. Once the top note has lifted, this layer takes centre stage, lending the composition both body and a renewed sense of freshness.
Damascone Delta (delta-damascone) is an isomer of the damascone and damascenone group, collectively known as rose ketones. It is an exceptionally potent material; a single drop can steer an entire composition. For this reason, most formulators handle it in diluted stock solution.
Scent Profile and Function
Compared with other members of its family, Damascone Delta has a more fruity and transparent character. The smoky, heavy quality of beta-damascone recedes here, replaced by suggestions of apple, plum, and rose petal.
| Damascone type | Dominant character | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha-damascone | Rose, apple, softer | Floral rose accords |
| Beta-damascone | Intense rose, smoky, heavy | Oriental, tobacco hearts |
| Delta-damascone | Fruity, bright, rose petal | Fruity-floral, fresh hearts |
| Damascenone | Most powerful, winey-rose, diffusive | Trace-level depth enhancer |
In the fragrance pyramid it sits as a heart note, yet its sillage is strong enough to project into the top-note phase as well. It revives rose accords, adds body to fruity openings, and breaks flatness in a composition. Damascone Delta is not a fragrance in its own right — it is a modifier: think of it as a dial that turns up the brightness of the notes around it.
If you are working on a rose accord, try it alongside Labdanum Absolute Super Premium for resinous depth, or with Allyl Heptanoate for a fruity opening. The rest is your signature.
How and at What Dosage Should It Be Used?
Damascone Delta is an extremely powerful material. Overdosing smothers a composition and pushes it towards a harsh, plasticky-fruity sharpness. The key is to use it sparingly but precisely.
| Purpose | Recommended dosage (in composition) |
|---|---|
| Trace / depth-enhancing touch | 0.1–0.3% |
| Reviving a rose accord | 0.3–1% |
| Prominent fruity-rose theme | 1–2% |
Remember: longevity depends not just on dosage but on the volatility balance of the entire formula. Adding Damascone Delta at a higher rate does not automatically deliver greater longevity; the decisive factor is the volatility of the raw materials. Dosage alone does not determine performance.
Solubility and Blending
Damascone Delta is a liquid, so it does not require the heating step needed to dissolve solid materials. It dissolves readily in alcohol (ethanol), DPG (dipropylene glycol), and IPM (isopropyl myristate). Because the material is so potent, preparing a stock solution is the most reliable way to minimise weighing errors.
- Prepare your stock
Combine 1 g of Damascone Delta with 9 g of DPG to obtain a 10% stock solution. Use a precision balance (0.001 g).
- Mix
As this is a liquid-to-liquid blend, no heat is needed. If you do not have a magnetic stirrer, capping the vial and shaking for a few minutes is sufficient.
- Rest
Leave the stock solution at room temperature for a few hours and check for homogeneity.
- Add to your formula
Calculate based on the stock percentage: to target 0.5% in the composition, you need to weigh out five times as much of the 10% stock.
Tips and Frequently Asked Questions
The key to taming Damascone Delta is to think of it not as a soloist but as a director. A few practical notes:
- Start at trace level
Add 0.1% first and evaluate blind. If it feels insufficient, increase; dialling it back once overdosed is difficult.
- Try it in rose accords
Its brightness comes to the fore alongside rose chemicals such as Geraniol and citronellol.
- Allow maceration
Leave the blend to rest at room temperature (~15–20 °C) in the dark for several weeks. This chemical maturation rounds off sharp edges. Keep it at ambient temperature rather than chilling, as low temperatures slow the process.
