Norlimbanol — What Is It?

Norlimbanol is a synthetic aroma chemical renowned for its potency within the sharply dry woody family of perfumery. Even a small amount makes itself felt in a formula. It lends dryness, bare wood, and a faintly ambery backbone to a composition.

Role: Woody / amber-woody accentTypical usage: 0.1–2% Form: liquid (viscous)Solubility: alcohol / DPG / IPM CAS: 68039-49-6

Its synthetic origin does not automatically make it "safer"; safety depends on the molecule and usage level, not the source. The real issue with Norlimbanol is its sheer strength: push the dose too far and it will crush an entire accord.

02

What It Does and Its Scent Profile

Norlimbanol is like a knife sharpening a cedar pencil: it carries a sharp, dry, almost dusty woody-amber character. It is not sweet; on the contrary, it imparts a bare, mineral dryness.

Its place in the fragrance pyramid sits between the heart and the base. When the top notes lift off, this layer strengthens the stage. Rather than being a standalone note, it is a supporting molecule that adds dryness and volume to the skeleton of a formula. Its low volatility contributes to the overall longevity of a composition — but bear in mind, longevity is determined by the formula's overall volatility balance, not by dosage alone.

Norlimbanol balances the balsamic warmth of Labdanum Absolute Super Premium and imparts dryness to it. On its own it can feel cold; paired with a resinous partner it warms right up.

How to Use It and at What Dosage

Norlimbanol is extremely powerful. Think in grams and start diluted. Working from a stock solution rather than counting drops directly from the concentrate reduces the margin for error.

PurposeTypical rate in composition
Trace accent (touch of dryness)0.1–0.3%
Distinct woody backbone0.3–1%
Character-defining (use carefully)1–2%

In most formulas below 0.5% is sufficient. Exceeding 2% overwhelms most compositions and can veer into a plastic-like tone.

  1. Start diluted

Rather than weighing the concentrate directly, add it from a 10% stock solution (see the table below).

  2. Add little, smell often

Enter the accord step by step. Norlimbanol accumulates; you cannot remove it afterwards.

  3. Balance it

If it feels too dry, soften it with a gentle musk such as Tonalide or a light balsam.

  4. Wait and evaluate

After maceration the character settles; the initial sharpness softens and finds its place over time.

Tip: Placing Norlimbanol beneath the fruity-rose structure of Damascone Delta seats the floral "on wood" — giving the composition depth and tenacity.

Regarding IFRA: the limit applies to the level of this material on its own and to the product category (leave-on/rinse-off), not to the total percentage of the fragrance oil. Norlimbanol is on the IFRA restricted list; verify the applicable upper limit from the current IFRA category and read the compliance statement for the fragrance oil.

Solubility and Stock Solution

Norlimbanol is a viscous liquid; it dissolves readily in alcohol (ethanol), DPG (dipropylene glycol) and IPM (isopropyl myristate). Because it is a liquid, no melting is required; however, given its potency it is advisable to work with it diluted rather than neat.

The table below helps you set up a working solution for precise dosing. DPG is preferred as an odourless, neutral carrier solvent — bear in mind that it is not a fixative; it serves only as a carrier/diluent.

Stock %MaterialSolvent (DPG/IPM/ethanol)Total
10%1 g9 g10 g
20%2 g8 g10 g
50%5 g5 g10 g

Preparation: weigh everything in grams (g). Combine the material and solvent in a clean bottle, close the cap, and shake until homogeneous; use a magnetic stirrer if needed. Norlimbanol dissolves easily and requires no heat. Still, take care with g↔ml conversions: specific gravities differ, so if you are filling by volume, factor in density or you risk overflow or under-filling.

High-proof ethanol and many solvents are flammable (low flash point). Ensure good ventilation, avoid static, and wear gloves and eye protection. Concentrated fragrance oil is intended for cosmetic use only; it is not edible or drinkable.

Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

The golden rule when working with Norlimbanol can be summed up in one word: less. Accept its power from the outset and it will not catch you off guard. Everything else is your signature.

  1. Backbone first, decoration second

Position Norlimbanol in the skeleton of the accord; build floral and fruity notes on top of it.

  2. Soften with musk

If it sits too bare, take the edge off with a clean musk such as Tonalide.

  3. Warm it with resin

Labdanum or benzoin turns its cold dryness into a warm amber.

  4. Macerate correctly

Rest the blend at room temperature (~15–20 °C) and away from light; the sharpness will settle into place.

Why does Norlimbanol smell so strong?
Because it is a molecule with a very low odour detection threshold; even an amount too small to see with the naked eye radiates a woody-dry character. This is why dosing from a 10–20% stock solution is safer than working with the concentrate directly.
Does Norlimbanol improve longevity?
Thanks to its low volatility it contributes to the base layer of a formula and can have a positive effect on overall longevity. However, longevity depends on the entire volatility balance of the formula, not on a single material. No firm hour-by-hour performance guarantee can be made; test it in your own accord.
Which solvent should I use for dilution?
Use ethanol for alcohol-based perfumes; DPG for those wanting a neutral carrier; IPM for oil or oil-based applications. Because Norlimbanol is a liquid and dissolves easily, no heat is needed — shaking or magnetic stirring is sufficient.
