What Is Galaxolide? Its Use and Dosage in Perfumery

Galaxolide is the most widely used polycyclic musk in modern perfumery, responsible for the clean, soft, and warm base that holds a fragrance together. Learn its scent profile, recommended usage rates, solubility, and IFRA considerations.

Galaxolide What Is It?

The "clean laundry" feeling of a fragrance — that soft, warm backdrop — is most often carried by a single molecule: Galaxolide. It is the most widely used polycyclic musk (multi-ring synthetic musk) raw material in modern perfumery. Once the top notes lift away, it lays down that cottony foundation that takes centre stage.

Role: musk (synthetic white musk)Typical usage rate: 0.5%–10% Form: viscous liquid (commonly sold as a ~50% solution in DEP/IPM)Solubility: alcohol / DPG / IPM CAS: 1222-05-5

Commercially, Galaxolide is most often supplied not in pure form but as an approximately 50% solution in diethyl phthalate (DEP) or isopropyl myristate (IPM). In its pure state it is a viscous, semi-solid mass at room temperature. For this reason, the "form" varies depending on the batch you purchase — always read the carrier ratio on the label.

A clear answer to the natural vs. synthetic debate: Galaxolide is entirely synthetic, and its allergen profile is far more predictable than that of natural musk sources. Safety, however, depends not on the source but on the molecule and the usage level — we will cover this under the IFRA heading.

Scent Profile and Function

Galaxolide's signature is clean, soft, and mildly sweet. It is the archetypal representative of the "white musk" family.

Character notes:

  • Clean/soapy — evocative of freshly washed fabric and warm laundry.
  • Powdery–sweet — not sugary; a dry, understated sweetness.
  • Rounding — smooths sharp edges and "glues" a formula together.
Position in the pyramid: Base note and fixative foundation. Galaxolide is not particularly long-lasting on its own, but it acts as a carpet beneath the volatile notes, carrying the composition's diffusion (sillage) and skin feel.

Let us correct a common misconception about longevity: longevity is not determined by dosage alone. The true determining factor is the volatility of the raw materials. Galaxolide sits at medium-heavy volatility; for a genuinely "stable for hours" dry-down, it needs to be supported by heavier fixatives (macrocyclic musks, balsams, and resins). If you are looking for a heavier musk, explore Tonalide; for a warmer, ambery depth, Labdanum Absolute makes an excellent partner.

How and at What Rate to Use It

Galaxolide is a generous material; unless overused, it carries rather than overwhelms a formula. The ranges below apply within the concentrate (fragrance oil concentrate), not the finished product.

PurposeRate in concentrateEffect
Trace / touch0.5%–2%Light clean base; softens imperceptibly
Perceptible musk theme2%–6%"Laundry" character becomes legible
Main musk body6%–10%Dominant base in musk-focused compositions
Note: These rates are most meaningful when working with the commonly available ~50% commercial solution. If you are using pure Galaxolide, the active substance is twice as concentrated — start at half the rate and test within your own formula.

IFRA considerations: The limit is governed by the molecule's own level and the product category (leave-on / rinse-off), not by the total fragrance oil percentage. Do not make generalisations such as "this percentage is safe in any product." Verify the limit from the current IFRA category for Galaxolide and read the compliance statement for the batch you have purchased.

Density note: The specific gravity of Galaxolide solution is approximately 0.99–1.02 g/ml, varying with the carrier. Weigh your formula in grams (g). If you bottle by volume (ml) without accounting for the density difference, you will end up with overfill or underfill.

Solubility and Blending

Galaxolide dissolves well in alcohol, DPG (dipropylene glycol), and IPM. Being a liquid or viscous material, a separate stock solution table is not strictly necessary. However, if you are working with the pure, viscous form, you may wish to dilute it first to make handling easier.

  1. Weighing

Weigh Galaxolide directly into the concentrate vessel by gram. If it is in its viscous state, a gentle warm water bath (~30–35°C) will improve flowability.

  2. Combining with solvent

Add it to ethanol, DPG, or IPM. If you have a magnetic stirrer, stir at medium speed for 5–10 minutes.

  3. Clarity check

Continue stirring until the solution is completely clear. If cloudiness persists, gentle heat will help.

  4. Maceration

Once the finished composition has been diluted with alcohol, allow it to macerate (chemical maturation).

Do not confuse maceration with chilling: Maceration is carried out at room temperature (~15–20°C) in the dark — as temperature drops, maturation reactions slow, so the refrigerator is not appropriate. Chilling (~0–4°C, ~24 hours) is a separate step that comes after maceration; its purpose is to precipitate waxy or insoluble components. These are then removed by cold filtration; otherwise sediment will settle at the bottom of the bottle.
Water and clarity: Increasing the water content in the final product causes hydrophobic components to lose their alcohol solubility, triggering clouding (louching) — water does not prevent haziness, it causes it. Water's role is to soften the initial harshness of alcohol. Start with a small amount of water and test for clarity; if you encounter problems, use a ready-made perfumer's alcohol.
Safety: High-grade ethanol is flammable (low flash point). Avoid static electricity, ensure good ventilation, and wear gloves and eye protection.

Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

Galaxolide is an affordable, reliable, and "completing" tool for any formula. A few practical notes:

  • Use it as an edge-softener. If a floral or woody accord feels harsh, add 2–3% Galaxolide; it will take the edge off.
  • Layer it with other musks. On its own it can feel somewhat flat; paired with Tonalide or a macrocyclic musk, it gains depth.
  • Support for fruity/floral hearts. It acts as a soft bed beneath a powerful rose-fruit molecule such as Damascone Delta.
  • Do not expect instant longevity. Galaxolide builds the foundation; add heavier fixatives for the drydown.

Is Galaxolide a true fixative?
Not entirely. As a musk, Galaxolide sits at medium-heavy volatility and provides a base for the composition, but for a genuinely long drydown you will need true fixatives (macrocyclic musks, heavy resins, and balsams). Thinking of it as a "rounding base" is accurate; it is not a longevity guarantee on its own.
Is there a dosage difference between pure Galaxolide and a 50% solution?
Yes. The market predominantly supplies ~50% solutions in DEP or IPM. The rates in this article are generally given on the assumption of using the solution. If you are working with the pure form, the active substance is twice as concentrated — start at half the rate and test within your own formula. Always check the carrier ratio on your batch label.
Is Galaxolide safe for skin?
Safety depends not on the source (natural/synthetic) but on the molecule and the usage level. Galaxolide is a synthetic with a predictable allergen profile; nonetheless, like every molecule it is subject to its own IFRA limits. Verify the limit from the current IFRA category and the compliance statement for the fragrance oil you have purchased. This is a cosmetic raw material, not a food ingredient; it is not edible or drinkable.
